Drumheads

They used to be made from animal skins, now they're made from plastic. A drumhead is a membrane that's additionally reinforced by a metal hoop. Today, using synthetics rather than skins in their production is tied to moral considerations, fewer controversies, but also economic reasons (plastic drumheads are cheaper). Drumheads are divided primarily into batter heads, meaning the top ones that get struck (in other words - hit - with drumsticks and beaters during play), and resonant heads - fitted to the bottom of the drum, whose job is to resonate the sound. A very important criterion when choosing a head is the number of plies it's made of. You can choose from: single-ply heads - characterized by a sharp attack, bright tone and longer sustain, or double-ply heads - giving a gentler, lower tone and shorter sustain. Drumheads are also distinguished by their coating, where you can pick between clear heads (bright tone and clear attack) and coated heads (with a white, rough surface; characterized by a darker sound and shorter sustain).

Drumhead - purpose

Three basic groups can be distinguished here:

1) Snare drumheads:

- batter - are coated drumheads available in single-ply and double-ply versions; you can choose from a rich range of heads fitted with dampers, reinforcing patches and vent holes,

- resonant - are very thin, most often single-ply, without dampers or patches (a small range to choose from).

2) Tom drumheads:

- batter - can be single-ply or double-ply, coated or clear - used depending on the effect you want to achieve,

- resonant - you can use single-ply clear drumheads (also used as batter heads) as well as ones made solely with the resonant function in mind, which are much thinner and will sharpen the sound of the toms.

3) Bass drum drumheads:

- batter - on the market you can find both single- and double-ply, you can choose drumheads with a muffling ring or ones without any additional elements (providing an open, longer sound),

- resonant - most often single-ply and have an internal muffling ring.
