Hand Percussion

A cajon is a wooden box you sit on and play with your hands — the center of the front plate gives a deep, bass sound, while its edge gives a dry, snare-like crack. Our Polmuz Model 1 has a front plate made of birch, costs 600 PLN, and works well as a first cajon.

What is a cajon

A cajon is a percussion instrument shaped like a wooden box, originating from Peru. You play it by sitting on the top panel and striking the front plate with your hands: a hit in the center gives a low, bass sound similar to a bass drum, while a hit near the edge gives a high, dry crack that stands in for a snare drum. The sound comes out through an opening in the back panel.

Many cajons have springs or strings inside, pressed against the front plate, which add a buzzing noise to the sound, like a snare drum. This lets you play a rhythm on a single instrument that would normally require a whole drum kit, which is why the cajon works so well at acoustic concerts, in small venues, and around a campfire.
