How much does a drum kit cost?

The cheapest complete Polmuz kits are the Model 4 series, from 2499 PLN, and Model 3, from 3552 PLN - good instruments to start with, for rehearsals and first gigs. The Model 1 and Model 2 kits, built in our workshop in Gdynia from maple, bubinga and walnut, cost from around 5 500 PLN, and with elaborate configurations and intricate finishes, the price rises along with the number of drums and the work put into the lacquer.

What is a drum kit?

"Perkusja" is the colloquial name for a drum kit. It is a group of percussion instruments used in popular music in the broadest sense. A typical drum kit usually consists of:

The bass drum, also known as the kick drum, is struck with the foot using a single or double pedal. The most popular size is 22" but sizes ranging from 16 - 26" are also common

The snare drum is a percussion instrument that produces a sharp, buzzing staccato sound thanks to tensioned snare wires pressed against the bottom resonant drumhead. Snare drums are often used in orchestras, marching bands, parades, drum corps and above all in popular music in the broad sense. Alongside the bass drum, it is the most important element of a drum kit, responsible for the "back beat". The most popular size is 14x5,5" but you can find all sorts of dimensions, from 6 to 15" in diameter and 3 - 10" in depth 

tom-toms - drums mounted on a tom holder, suspended on stands or a rack. Their number depends on the drummer's preferences. When well tuned, they usually differ from each other by a fifth, a fourth or a third. Sizes range from 6" to 15"

- the floor tom is a drum that usually stands on legs, but can also be mounted on a drum rack or stand. Sizes in the range of 16-18" in various depths.

In addition to the elements mentioned above that make up the so-called shell set, the drum kit is completed by cymbals: hi-hat, ride, crash, and other effect cymbals such as china, splash, bell stack, gong, etc.

The most common drum kits are birch and maple ones. They're also the most universal option. Their warm sound, rich especially in higher and mid tones, works in practically every music genre - especially in pop and rock music.

Tuning drums is a very individual matter. One could argue that there are as many methods as there are drummers… Every professional musician has their own ways of tuning an instrument to get the maximum tone, clarity, and attack out of it…

Electronic or acoustic drums?

This is a question many people just dreaming of starting their adventure with drums ask themselves. Will an electronic drum kit work well for a beginner? Can it really serve as a worthy substitute for a classic acoustic kit? It's hard to argue with the undeniable advantages of acoustic drums. They look impressive, provide a live sound, and of course the power of sound that you feel with your whole body.

And yet modern electronic drum kits are also true works of art. It's often hard to distinguish their sound from acoustic drums. They have many advantages that are completely unattainable with acoustic kits, including:

They offer a huge range of sounds - a quick change of settings is enough to play rock, pop, jazz, hip hop on one kit, or experiment with digital effects. Only your imagination limits you,

They provide a connection to a computer, which allows for easy recording of the instrument even at home,

They are compact - they take up little space at home and are easy to transport.

But by far the most important advantage of electronic drums is that they make much less noise than acoustic drums. With their help, playing drums in an apartment block, even in the evening, stops being a problem, and instead of loud drum amplification you can use headphones

When deciding to buy a drum kit, it's worth stocking up on interesting and, above all, useful accessories dedicated to drums and cymbals. These include: drum thrones, tuning keys, bags, drum tuners, protective headphones, and accessories that help dampen the drums. The drum throne is the most important piece of hardware in terms of comfort and ergonomics while playing a drum kit. A drum key is mandatory equipment for every drummer. No drum tuning or tightening of a memory lock can be done without it. Bags work great in situations of frequent travel, as well as for storage, protecting against dust and moisture. A tuner is irreplaceable when you need to tune your drums efficiently, precisely and quickly before a concert. Headphones, in turn, effectively protect your hearing, especially when playing a drum kit with the whole band. Dampers are useful wherever rooms are poorly soundproofed, and also in situations where overtones generated by the drums are hard to eliminate. A common practice is replacing the drumheads that drum kits come fitted with from the factory with products from renowned brands. Such a modification can significantly improve the sound of the drums, without forcing the user into costly expenses. Since the snare drum and the bass drum pedal are used most intensively, their components such as drumheads, snare wires or screws can wear out very quickly. For this reason, it's worth stocking up on replacements if you play really often or run a rehearsal room.
